Sleepiness Has no Place on the Road The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) is leading the way in changing how Americans think about sleep. NSF programs strive to: • Raise public awareness of the importance of adequate sleep to health, safety, and overall well being;
• Raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of sleep disorders;
• Attract outstanding new investigators to sleep research through postdoctoral research fellowships; and
• Advocate for policies in both the public and private sectors that value adequate sleep.
One area of interest is the issue of sleep while driving a vehicle. A website that addresses this issue is www.DrowsyDriving.org. The site offers the latest information and resources to help raise awareness about a common problem that injures and kills thousands of people every year. Visitors will find:
• Tips describing warning signs and symptoms of the beginnings of sleepiness;
• Actions to take if one becomes sleepy behind the wheel;
• Comprehensive reference library;
• Tools for better sleep; and
• Information on at-risk groups.
For more information contact the National Sleep Foundation at (202) 347-3471 or visit www.sleepfoundation.org.
