On March 6, 2008, the Governor signed into law House Bill 5021, which then became Public Act 19 of 2008. The bill amended the Michigan Vehicle Code (MCL 257.708b), which prohibits a driver from watching TV while operating a vehicle. The law has been expanded to also prohibit drivers from watching “...other similar electronic device that displays a video image...” The intent of the law was to prohibit drivers from watching videos on laptop computers and other electronic devices. A violation of this requirement is a civil infraction. The law went into effect March 7, 2008.
