NHTSA Releases 2007 State-by-State Drunk Driving Fatality Information
32 States Reduced Drunk Driving-related Fatalities
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released the state-by-state drunk driving fatality information. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters announced that 32 states reduced their drunk driving-related fatalities in 2007. However, the number of alcohol related fatalities among motorcyclists climbed in half of the states.
In 2007, 12,998 people were killed by drunk drivers with a BAC of .08 or greater. This represents a 3.7 percent decline in drunk driving fatalities from 13,491 in 2006.
The Department of Transportation worked with law enforcement agencies across the nation to launch stepped-up drunk driving enforcement during the Labor Day holiday period. The Department invested $13 million in advertising during this period to deliver the message, “Drunk Driving. Over The Limit Under Arrest.”
The advertising campaign included media outlets and information sources that reached high demographic groups. The Department used more web-based outreach, teaming up with alternative media partners. The ads were seen on message banners, on well-known social media sites, internet TV programming, mobile devices and even PC-based video games.
