The current BAC DataMaster is 15-16 years old, and as with all electronic and computerized devices in the world today they continue to change. In 2007-2008 The Alcohol Enforcement Unit (AEU) tested and decided to make the switch to the new DataMaster (DMT). The DMT is manufactured by National Patent Analytical Systems; the DMT uses the same infrared absorption operating principal as the BAC DataMaster. The instrument will operate with Microsoft windows and will have an external key board and printer.
The use of Microsoft windows and a larger screen will allow us to make the instrument more user friendly for the officer conducting the breath test. Some of the changes will include: the officer will type in the start of the observation time; the test results will be printed on a 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper; and in the case of a “Refusal”, “Invalid sample” or “Interference” etc. message the instrument will display directions for the officer to follow. We are planning to place the first instruments close to the Lansing area to monitor any problems or concerns we have and to address any court challenges and issues.
We hope to make the complete change over within 2 years. All officers who are current Class II Operators will be required to attend an up date training. The AEU in cooperation with Dr. Felix Adatsi and Dr. Michele Glinn have performed testing on the new instrument for many of the most common defense issues facing us today, and will continue testing on the current BAC DataMaster and the new DMT DataMaster. We anticipate a smooth transition to the instrument and look forward to working with all Prosecutors during the transition in their jurisdiction.
