Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Smith and Charlevoix County Prosecuting Attorney John Jarema were presented Lifesaver Awards by MADD Michigan Executive Director Homer Smith for their leadership in improving traffic safety in their jurisdictions.
Eric Smith has more than proven himself to be a partner with MADD. Over his tenure as Macomb County Prosecutor he has been relentless in his pursuit of nothing less than for the offenders to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. A most recent example of this would be the upcoming trial of Frances Dingle who has been charged with four counts of second degree murder. Dingle allegedly had a BAC of .23 when she broadsided a car carrying four teenagers on March 16, 2009.
Eric Smith has done everything he can to keep Michigan’s citizens safe on our roads.

John Jarema has been involved in the development and implementation of Sobriety Court at the District Court level in Charlevoix County, Juvenile Drug Court at the Probate Court level, the formation of the multi-jurisdictional Drug Death Team in Charlevoix County and instituted a program where families could have confidential drug testing done on their teens through a local substance abuse agency with funds generated through fees for drunk driving offenses.
These funds have also helped several schools and agencies obtain the passive alcohol sensor flashlight / breathalyzer for early detection and prevention of drunk driving, in addition, materials and incentives for families of juvenile drug court participants. The Prosecutors Office in Charlevoix has a victim advocate who works closely with families impacted by numerous crimes.
